GRAIN ROT: How to Burn Grain Rot Safely
Fire clears Rot patches, but the solution is dangerous because the vessels and much of the world are built to burn.
Why normal attacks are the wrong test
Rot is a corruption hazard, not ordinary furniture or an enemy health bar. Repeated melee hits can waste durability and leave the player standing in the hazard without changing it.
If a patch does not react immediately, step back and check whether the fire actually reached the Rot surface. Do not keep swinging because the effect is subtle.
Method one: a flame-capable vessel
Use the weapon or attack of a flame-capable vessel to burn the Rot. This method keeps the flame under player control and avoids spending an oil lantern, but it still creates a fire hazard near a wooden body.
Aim at the Rot rather than at nearby constructs or carried objects. Leave room to retreat and watch the spread before firing again.
Method two: activate and break an oil lantern
An inactive lantern that simply breaks may not create the intended effect. Read the interaction state before committing the item.
Place the lantern only after the team clears the immediate area. A physics bounce can move the fire source away from the target or toward something valuable. One controlled attempt is safer than several players throwing fire items at the same patch.
Burning Rot on the second floor
Google autocomplete shows a specific second-floor version of this question, which suggests players can reach the room before understanding the fire requirement. Unlocking access and clearing Rot are separate progression tasks.
Do not interpret a blocked objective as proof that the floor key failed. Confirm that the entire required patch is affected and allow the fire interaction to finish. If the objective still does not advance, save origin and current patch become the next checks.
Protect vessels, teammates and the haul
The official game premise emphasizes that wooden vessels splinter and catch fire. Clearing corruption with fire therefore exchanges one hazard for another. Keep replacement bodies, teammates and extracted valuables outside the spread zone.
In co-op, one player should handle ignition while the others stop moving objects through the area. Friendly physics can turn a controlled setup into a lost vessel. Wait until the fire is out before resuming demolition or carrying.
Troubleshoot without inventing a third method
If neither reported method works, verify the item is active, the fire overlaps the Rot and the game is updated. Old demo/playtest saves can have progression issues, and the official FAQ recommends a fresh release save. Test methodically before downloading unofficial files or applying a cheat.
There is no developer note confirming that ordinary weapons, water or an Outpost room level clears the same objective.
Burning Rot FAQ
Can I hit Rot with a normal weapon?
No. Repeated melee hits waste durability and expose the vessel; use fire instead.
Does the same method work on the second floor?
If progress does not update, confirm the full patch, game version and save origin.

Beginner GuidePossess a vessel, descend in the elevator, gather useful resources or process furniture for gold, secure the extraction, and spend the haul on the Outpost. A broken vessel releases its Living Spark, but a full crew loss costs everything that was not already secured.
Get a Body BackA destroyed vessel is not revived. Its Living Spark escapes and must possess another valid vessel before fading. The official FAQ confirms this recovery loop; if the whole crew loses every controlled vessel, unsecured run loot is lost.
