GRAIN ROT Enemies and the Corrupted
There is no complete official monster glossary, but the game does confirm the senses that make every Corrupted encounter dangerous.
Enemy list and the safest response
GRAIN ROT mixes named threats with corrupted vessels that are easier to recognize by movement and attack pattern than by a permanent bestiary label. Use the behavior column first: it tells you whether to create distance, break sightlines or leave the room.
| Enemy or threat | What it does | Best response | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wailer | Uses close pressure, a melee attack and an area attack | Do not let constructs pin you in its reach; move before committing to another swing | Patch 1.08 changed when its area attack is used and added another melee attack |
| Flying Head | Attacks from above and is not stopped by floor bear traps | Use cover and ranged damage; do not rely on a trap lane | Save ammunition for an exit-blocking pass |
| Corrupted Elite / The Big One | A tougher encounter tied to later Outpost progression | Enter with repaired gear, space to retreat and a prepared extraction | Treat it as an objective fight, not routine furniture clearing |
| Standard Corrupted vessels | React to sound, movement and nearby threats | Reduce demolition noise, break sightlines and keep the elevator direction known | Procedural rooms change the safest route |
| Rot-filled rooms | Raise Rot exposure while you remain in the hazard | Burn the Rot or take a protected route instead of fighting inside it | The room itself can be more dangerous than the enemy |
How to enter a room safely
Pause at the doorway long enough to locate the exit, vertical threats and floor hazards. Pull one target toward a cleared corridor instead of letting the entire room react to demolition or gunfire.
If the objective is already complete, leaving is a valid win. Enemy kills are not worth a lost fuse, broken vessel or unsecured haul.
Noise, movement and line of sight
Furniture breaking and firearms solve immediate problems but can wake up a larger area. After making noise, change position and watch the route you just opened.
Sprinting is most valuable when it creates separation. Running deeper into an uncleared room can turn one threat into several.
Boss and elite preparation
Repair the weapon you plan to keep, carry healing or a recovery option, and make the elevator usable before starting an optional elite fight. In co-op, one player should keep the return route clear while the others control the encounter.
Balance changes can alter exact attack timing, but spacing, retreat room and a secured exit remain reliable preparation.
GRAIN ROT enemies FAQ
How do GRAIN ROT enemies find players?
The Corrupted react to sound, movement and one another. The game does not display exact detection ranges, so reduce noise and break line of sight.
Should I fight every Corrupted?
No. Extraction and secured progress are the objective; bypassing a threat can preserve durability, health and the route home.
How many enemy types are in GRAIN ROT?
The demo advertised nine, while the full release added more plus bosses and elites.

Possess a vessel, descend in the elevator, gather useful resources or process furniture for gold, secure the extraction, and spend the haul on the Outpost. A broken vessel releases its Living Spark, but a full crew loss costs everything that was not already secured.
Best WeaponsThere is no single best weapon for every run. Use a sword for controlled melee, a hammer for combat plus demolition, a mallet for early furniture breaking, and a firearm when a dangerous target must be stopped at range. Solo players should keep a ranged emergency option whenever ammunition allows.
Get a Body BackA destroyed vessel is not revived. Its Living Spark escapes and must possess another valid vessel before fading. The official FAQ confirms this recovery loop; if the whole crew loses every controlled vessel, unsecured run loot is lost.
Elevator SymbolsTreat each symbol as an exit blocker, hazard, utility room or reward modifier. The fuse blocks extraction until replaced; the eye signals darkness; the bear trap adds floor traps; map and press add utility rooms. For skull, keyhole and question-cube runs, prepare the exit before chasing optional rewards.
